A New Weather Station at the RNSC

Looking at some of the data coming out of the RNSC renegade weather station, there is snow in the forecast!  Thanks to Mike Thomas for setting up a weather station that provides weather data for us to share on the RNSC website: www.revelstokenordic.org  It’s a work in progress, but you can look for weather updates on our homepage and on trail reports.

Membership Tags

Membership tags will be available in the lodge during our regular lodge hours.  We encourage members to wear their tags in a visible location at all times.  This year, we’ve switched to a smaller keytag for our membership passes and we hope the size and style of these new passes will make them easier and more stylish for you to wear.  🙂

Ski Programs are Starting!

December 2nd is the start date for some of our ski programs (Bunnies start January 6th, 2018) and the fun begins even if the trails are not open.  There is a pancake breakfast that starts at 9am and kids should be with their coaches at 9:45am.  For more information about ski programs, check the program page on our website.  Yes, it is still possible to register and get in on the fun.

Keep your fingers crossed for snow and we will see you on the trails!

Strategic Planning
: A note from the Executive

Last year, the board was successful in receiving a grant for some strategic planning for our club.  This year, we have started a process to review our club operations to help us design a plan that will strengthen and shape the RNSC in the years ahead.  You will hear more about this process in the months ahead, and we look forward to your input.

Thanks for reading!

Nordic News: September 17th, 2017

September 17th, 2017
Greetings to the Revelstoke Nordic Community!

We hope that you have all had an enjoyable summer, and that September is treating you well.  Winter may still be a long way from your thoughts, but there are plenty of things already underway to make this another great season at the Revelstoke Nordic Ski Club.
The RNSC Executive is busy preparing, Ski League registrations have begun, and as I type this letter, Matt Smider (our multi-talented RNSC head coach) is out at Blanket Creek hosting an Okanagan Regional Dryland Camp with over 100 Nordic racers in attendance.
For those of you already looking to the mountaintops for the first signs of winter, here are some timely news items and some other club news:
Get Ready for the Winter with Nordic Yoga
Balu Yoga and Wellness is offering Yoga classes tailored specifically to Nordic skiing this fall.  Classes with Lisa Cyr start on Monday, September 18th (@ 7:30pm) and run for 10 weeks.  Cost is $119.

Level One Officials Course in Revelstoke
In association with Cross Country BC (CCBC), the RNSC offering a one day Officials Level 1 course on October 28, 2017 in Revelstoke. This course is an introduction to all of the roles and responsibilities of officials in all types of races, from Loppets to Provincial Championships.
This is the first time we’ve hosted an officials course here, and with a new generation of parents and volunteers coming through, its a real opportunity to learn more about races, become certified, and help Revelstoke continue to host awesome races. Please let Mike Thomas know this week if you are interested in attending, email Mike at [email protected].

BC Midget Championships Update

We’ve agreed to host the BC Midgets Championships this coming season. It’s a two day competition for 8-12 year old athletes from across the province, running March 3rd and 4th, 2018. It’s an awesome event, often the first racing experience for the younger athletes, and offers an interval start classic race, a team relay and skate sprints.  This promises to be an exciting few days at the club!

A New BBQ for the RNSC
You can look forward to some tasty smells in the air during club events this winter.  The RNSC bought a new barbecue!  🙂

Looking Ahead…
As winter approaches, we will send you more information about our fall membership drive, a newsletter, and a few more email updates.
Have a great September, and we look forward to seeing you again this winter.

March 29th, 2017
Greetings Nordic Folk!
Can you believe that April is almost here?  As the official season draws to a close, here’s the Nordic News you need to know:
Annual General Meeting: April 11th, 7pm
Our AGM will be held on Tuesday, April 11th, 7pm, at the Revelstoke Nordic Lodge.  Along with our regular business of electing a new board, we will also be looking for member approval of the revised bylaws (so that we are compliant with the new Society Act), as well as changes to day-user fees for next season.  Please refer to the AGM notice for all the details and links to relevant documents.
AGM Pre-Ski
If there is enough snow, the RNSC will host a preAGM ski.  Come to the club at 5:30pm on April 11th for a ski with your fellow members, enjoy some treats, and enjoy the democratic process.
Feedback Form for Members
The RNSC want to hear from you.   Please fill out this google form and share your thoughts about the club, suggest ways we might develop, and tell us how you’d like to be involved!
Trail Grooming Ends on April 2nd
Our trail-grooming crew commits to a season-long schedule of late nights and early mornings to make our trail system great.  It has been a fantastic season on our trails largely due to their efforts, so be sure to thank a groomer near you.
Don’t forget the Lost and Found
Next time you are at the club, check the lost and found for things that may belong to you or your family.  You never know what you could be missing!  Unclaimed items will be sold (by donation) at Member’s Night next year.
RNSC Racing Team Shines at the Nationals!
The RNSC turned in one of the club’s finest performances ever at the Ski Nationals in Canmore last week.  Thanks to the efforts of our athletes and their coach, Matt Smider, we were the top performing club in all of BC!  Read about Beth’s gold, Elizabeth and Alana’s silver, and the other fine results from our racers in The Revelstoke Review or the Revelstoke Mountaineer.
We hope you’ve had a great season with the RNSC and we hope to see on the trails and at the AGM.

Member Info: Revision of by-laws

Attention RNSC Members: By-Law Revisions in Process

This update to members is from our “Transition Committee” made up of Gary Graf (Club President), Lori Milmine (Club Secretary), Josie Woodman (Director at Large) and Kelsey Knoll (Club Manager).  The purpose of this committee is to guide our club through the transition process that is required of all non-profit clubs in BC since the legislative change to the Societies Act in November 2016. The club has two years to complete the process, but there are advantages to our club if we complete the new bylaw adoption at our AGM in April.  This is the first step in updating and aligning all our governing documents to current standards.

The following information contains:

  1. Background Information, links to the relevant legislation, and a review of our intentions.
  2. The proposed process and an invitation to you, our members, about any revisions to the draft by-laws that you think are needed.

Background Information:

In developing these by-laws we have tried to:

  1. a) Comply with the new Societies Act
  2. b) Clarify and simplify
  3. c) Change the by-laws to reflect current club practice and what we believe the club members want.

Note:   As part of the process we need to remove everything from the constitution except the name of the club and its purposes.  We cannot change the purposes or the name of the club as part of this process.  Everything else that was in the constitution now must go in the bylaws word-for-word.  The club can change these items later if it chooses.

Proposed Process:

  1. We invite comments from you, our members, about any revisions to the draft by-laws you think are needed.  The current constitution and bylaws can be found here. The revised ones can be found here
  2. Please email your comments and suggestions to in to  [email protected]by MARCH 27th, 2017.
  3. We will consider comments and incorporate them as needed into a new draft.
  4. We plan to ask the membership to adopt the revised bylaws by “Special Resolution” at the AGM on April 11, 2017.
  5. If bylaws are adopted, we will submita “Transition Application” to the government to formalise the updates.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

The Transition Committee (Gary Graf, Kelsey Knoll, Lori Milmine, Josie Woodman)

-on behalf of the Revelstoke Nordic Ski Club Board of Directors
