Mt. Macpherson Backcountry Access
-
Backcountry users can access the east face of Mt. Macpherson including "The Fingers", "The Womb", "Burnt knob" and "Fuzzy knob" via the Nordic Main Loop and Mountain Climb trails. This backcountry area is in avalanche terrain and outside the club's User Agreement boundaries. All users visiting this area should have the proper knowledge, training, and equipment. Winter backcountry travel conditions and avalanche forecasts can accessed through Avalanche Canada.
-
Backcountry Access fees are required to help cover costs associated with maintaining the backcountry access route through our groomed trails, snow clearing in our parking lot and maintenance and operation of our day lodge - which you are more than welcome to use. An outhouse is located by treeline in the stadium, adjacent to the parking lot, for use when the lodge is closed.
You can purchase a day pass for $8 or a season pass for $30. Please note, this does not include access to cross country ski trails other than the designated access route, and does not include club membership
Both the Day Pass and Annual Pass can be purchased at the Ticket & Rental Office located in the lodge, or can be purchased online with the links listed below.
Outside office hours, please pay fees online or by using the fee vault and envelopes provided. Envelopes and the yellow fee box are both conveniently located at the information kiosks next to the lodge.
-
Please stay on the designated access routes only to ensure safety for other trail users. Access begins at the North end of the stadium area and follows the upper stadium trail to the Main loop. Turn left onto Mountain Climb and continue to the Fingers access trail. After this point, please use Avalanche safety practices - the backcountry area is not maintained.
-
Dogs are not permitted inside the lodge or on the deck. Please do not tie your dog to the lodge. Backcountry skiers accessing the Fingers must have their dog leashed on Main Loop (ascending AND descending). Dogs may be off-leash once off RNSC trails.
The Parking Lot and Stadium Area is a MANDATORY ON-LEASH area for all dogs at all times. Please respect that the parking lot is shared with children and other members.
Any dog poop must be removed from the trail, preferably with the provided trowels.
-
Obey all signs and ski within your ability.
Pack out all garbage, do not litter.
If you happen to fall, fill in your hole and fix the track.
Do not ski on set tracks.
When stopping, move to the side of the trail.
Cross-country skiers have right-of-way
When skiing in a group, please travel in single file and ensure that you do not block the trail for others.
-
You are responsible for your own safety when skiing the Macpherson trails. You can help yourself and others by carrying a cellular phone and being able to describe your location. Should a situation arise where you or someone else requires assistance, contact Revelstoke Search and Rescue(SAR). They can be reached through the RCMP by calling 911. Revelstoke SAR is a volunteer group that maintains a snowmobile with a toboggan, and have members trained in first aid. Call ahead to the hospital, 250-837-2131, to let them know you are coming.
While waiting for the snowmobile to arrive (this will take awhile), it is important to keep the victim warm. The club provides backpacks containing insulating pads, blankets, and first aid kits. These are kept at the Ole Sandberg Hut, the Day Lodge and at the junction of Hydro Hill and Cedar Ramble. The groomer also carries first aid materials.
To avoid this situation:
Always ski prepared. Bring water, extra clothing and snacks.
Keep to the marked trails.
Tell someone where you are going.
Our Complete Rescue plan is posted on our Trails Page.
Backcountry access fees go directly to parkinglot clearing, trail maintenence and facility operation.
Note: If you have an annual RNSC membership, backcountry access fees are included in your membership
